Hi!  I'm Freda had posted an entry a while back about my greyhound Simon.  I know his littermate Seiko was adopted through Make Peace with Animals, and I wanted to wish her a very Happy Birthday on July 28th!

My wife and I have been searching for the brother (Guess I Can Run) of our greyhound that we adopted last year (Chet).  He retired recently it seems but we can't locate him. Was on here looking around and am so glad to see so many sites dedicated to rescuing these wonderful creatures...though my wife always says that they rescued us, we just adopted them.  :-)  Keep up the good work!

Dear MPWA, I was looking at your guestbook, and saw the posting from Freda. My name is Beth and I adopted Seiko (AMF Tine to Fly) in September 2008.  She is a big, beautiful, dark brindle girl.  Very shy at first, as she continues to come out of her shell, she is blossoming into a playful, affectionate, well-mannered superdog. Thanks for the kind wishes. I feel honored to be able to share my life with such a wonderful being.
Beth

My name is Freda and my husband and I recently adopted a beautiful black greyhound boy.  His name is Simon (race name AMF Pulsar).  I was checking his page on greyhound-data.com, and found that one of his littermates, Seiko (race name AMF Tine to Fly) was adopted through Make Peace With Animals!   Congratulations to her new family--if she's anything at all like her brother, they got a really sweet little cuddlebug!  And if you've adopted out any greys with the sire TNT Star Wars, they've got a half-sister in my girl Shelby (race name Uroutofyourmind).  It's great to know there are so many people out there trying to help these beautiful dogs!

Dear Make Peace With Animals,  It's been 3 and a half weeks since my dad and I adopted wild athena and we LOVE her so so so much! She is so kind and gentle. I love how she always follows me around the house. It's like having a little sister (in a good way). This is my first time having a dog and its just wonderful. I've always been a cat person. But in a way athena is like a cat but more loving, caring, and active. I got athena as a very late birthday present and a early christmas present. The whole experience has been great and I am thankful that my dad and I choose her!
Sincerely,    Delia (11) and Hans Ascher         Tues. Jan. 1, 2008     P.S. I've learned so much about grey hounds!!

It is now 3 months since Major Kyle, or Kye as we call him joined our family. Back in January we sadly said good-by to our beloved Pete and had deceided that our remaining boys Gunnar and Mr.Murphy would be more then enough greyhound love for us, that was until I saw Kye's picture. He was returned, through no fault of his after being in a home for almost 2 years. He looked rather thin and his eyes seemed to have a sadness about them. He had lost his home and did not know what he had done to deserve this. At 7 1/2 years old finding a new home might not be so easy. We deceided we wanted him to join our family, so much for down sizing. Kye has turned out to be a wonderful boy, he is very smart and fit in like he has been here for years. Turns out he loves children and gets so excited when out for a walk and the neighborhood kids stop to see him. He loves to be loved but is not pushy. We are so happy to have Kye with us and we want to thank everyone at Make Peace who made it possible. If anyone has second thoughts about adopting a dog that is a little older, don't think twice just go for it, believe me you will not be sorry. Thank you again for bringing Kye into our lives.

Hi everyone this is Figs I just wanted to leave everyone know that I'm doing good. I have a new furry friend that likes to eat out my dish and sleep with me. I don't sleep in my crate anymore at night. I get to sleep on my Dad's side of the bed. I'm getting a little better when it's time to go inside. My Mom just has to get alittle strong with me. I had a party last week for what was called my 5th Birthday with my other animal friends I live with. I wasn't too sure about the cold stuff (Doggie Ice Cream) My family says I'll learn to like it. They sang to me and gave me alot of hugs and kisses I really liked THAT. I have to learn that the bright light that comes in the windows won't hurt me yet. Thank you for finding me a new home and to MY FOSTER FAMILY for helping me when I needed it!!!
Love,
Figgy Boy

I adopted an adorable greyhound named Bandit thru Make Peace with Animals in 2002.  We lived in Bethlehem Pa until July of 2006 when we moved to Ocala, Florida.  Bandit is loving his new 3 acre spread with his room mates, Tucker the Schnauzer and Duffy the Scottie.  They share the land with 4 horses, Quincy, Diablo, Phoenix and Red.  Bandit has been suck a blessing and I can't imagine life without him.  He has grown into such an outgoing gentleman from his introverted and scared grey.  Now he is the welcome wagon for all who visit.  He even continues his showmanship by being my "TV Star" for the children at the school I work for.  He will be starring in his own show for National Pet Month.  My thanks goes out to Cynthia Branigan for all she does for greyhounds!

I wanted to share with you my recent connection to the Make Peace with Animals organization and website. I am from Palermo, Maine and have been a greyhound lover and owner for over 20 years! Last month when I was shopping in a Goodwill Store, I came across a small stuffed greyhound with the Make Peace with Animals tag on it. I had never heard of the organization, but the little stuffed greyhound touched my heart, especially since our greyhound, Thatcher's Mark, at the age of 12 was declining quite rapidly in health. I am not sure how this stuffed greyhound ended up in a Goodwill Store here in Maine now that I have gone to the website on the tag and have learned of your location, but I am so very glad that it did! You see, on December 30, 2006 we again had to make the very difficult but necessary decision to let the last of our greyhound family (we had 4 at one time) go across the bridge. That night I could not stand the empty space between my husband and I in our bed and I could not stop crying. I got up and got my grey beeny hound (now that I know what he is) and brought him back to bed with me. I held on to him tight and he helped me to fall asleep. I am forever greytful that I found your beeny hound and will treasure him always! We have been lost without our greyhounds, and we are hoping to soon have another one join our family! God bless wonderful organizations such as Make Peace with Animals, and wonderful dogs like our greyhounds are! Nora Armstrong (and Paul, my husband, who is responsible for my knowing greys and having them in my life!) and our bridge greys: Malou Mark, Call Me Peanut, Thatcher Colt, Jack Armstrong, All American Dog, and Thatcher's Mark

Hi, We are going on our 3rd year with Zorro - aka "Z" as he likes to be called. He is truly the most interesting Greyhound we have adopted. After my beloved Lee lost his battle to cancer in Oct. of 2003, then we lost Taco our Dachshund in June, and Lexie our other greyhound to cancer that August. We were devastated. Z will be 6 years old this year. He leaps in the air and is quite a great dancer - I am not joking -, a difficult feat for a dog that is so huge ! He adores Pacey whom we adopted 2 years ago this summer, thanks to Cynthia's keen eye, he is a truly wonderful little guy. We also acquired a Jack Russell Terrier named Sloane a year ago this March. She will be 2 years old this year. Her breeder decided she would be unfit for breeding, and so we acquired her. The boys - Z and Pacey LOVE her, as she does them. Quite a crew we have here. I can't forget the 2 cats who are now 15 and 16 years old who have been so accepting of so many dogs - they are remarkable. Our new trio definitely allows for some looks of how in the world do those 3 dogs go together ! We will forever miss our original Three Muskateers of Lee, Lexie, and Taco - Gone but NEVER forgotten.

Hello All! My name is Wendy Culkin, and I just adopted Ditto's Reality, aka "Ben".    Thank you Chris and Patty for getting him to us. He has made our family  complete!   He is such a couch potatoe!  WE just LOVE HIM SO MUCH!!    I can't thank Make peace with animals enough for finding us our  PERFECT SON!!!  We decided to rename him "Rusty" After our favorite NASCAR DRIVER Rusty Wallace, with the # 2 Car. He just retired this Year too from racing. We thought the name would be appopriate   He has adjusted very well with my Great Dane "Sandy", and my German Shepherd"Nikki". They all run around in the back yard and seem to really like each other very much! My 2 daughters just love him!  They all play very well together.     I am looking forward to volunteering and helping out, becoming a "member " of Make Peace With Animals.  This is my First Greyhound Expierence, and I'm Loving it!!     I'm looking forward to meeting everyone at meets and the picnic! See Ya All Real Soon!!

Hi, This is Tigger reporting in again to wish all my special friends at Make Peace a wonderful Christmas and the best New Year ever. Magic and I have been very good boys and my Mom says that Santa is sure to bring us lots of presents. My New Year wish is that every Grey will find a forever home with a loving family. I know it will happen if Cynthia and Make Peace members have anything to do with it. Just look what they did for me!

I wanted to let Makepeace know how happy I am with my newest addition. Losy Maybe was adopted yesterday, we've decided to call her Maybe. She's beautiful and has adjusted nicely to our animals, Max (terrier) and Focker (the cat). She spent the afternoon with all my parents' animals and came home with us last night. She finally ate something when we got home. Focker still isn't sure what to make of her, but will get over that the same way he did when we brought Max home last year. We adopted Max one year ago yesterday... so I feel it was in the stars that we got Maybe on the same date. She is so happy to be here and is lovely to be around. If it weren't for her tags we wouldn't hear her behind us. Thanks you Makepeace for adding to my brood.

Thanks to a terrific group of people we had a greyt day on Sunday at the Long Island Motorcycle Fair in Riverhead, on Long Island, NY. Thank you to Dara,Gene, baby Jayden, Trish, Lisa,Christine and her son Mark. A special thanks to the salesmenship of Christine and Mark. They spent 90 percent of their time giving out "free refreshments" for a $2.00 donation!
Thank you to Gene and Mark doing a refreshment and ice run when we ran out. Christine even got to ride on a Harley by a generous biker who gave her a lift to the store to purchase more refreshments and then he donated them to Make Peace. We had a beautiful day.

The weather could not be better. The bikers could not have been more generous. Thank you to all of you for taking care of me today. I know I was in another world. Is everyone ready for the Grand Total of today's donations? Drum Roll please......... We will be sending Make Peace a check for $506.00.
This one is for you, Mom.

We've had Baker, one of the stars of the Animal Planet special, for four years now since our house fire. On Friday of last week we received the worst possible news that we could get; he has developed a bone tumor on his back right leg. Given his age, location of tumor and breed, the possibility of osteosarcoma is high. On Sunday we took Baker to Red Bank Animal Hospital for a consultation with Dr. Jill Sammarco. Given the aggressiveness of osteosarcoma, we made the difficult decision to have his leg amputated.
Baker made it through the surgery like a trooper and is recovering well and we are hoping that he can come home tomorrow! We will know the results of the histology report in about a week, after which he will most likely undergo chemo. This has been such a complete and devastating shock to us.
Just like all of the osteo stories we've heard about, he was running and playing in the yard just minutes before we noticed he had an issue with his leg. This is yet another sobering reminder to cherish every waking moment we have with our hounds because their time with us is so short-lived.
No matter how bad of a day we have and no matter how bad things in life seem, they are always glad to see us come home at the end of the day. Please think positive thoughts for Baker! We are so very happy to be able to bring him home tomorrow for his recovery.

Thank you, MPWA, for accepting our application so we could adopt our "Finn" (aka Greys Litefinger). Our application was in process when his picture and information were put in the "I Need a Home" section of the website, and I just happened to check the sight the same day thankfully! I mentioned to our wonderful volunteer (Kris) that we were interested in then named "Finger" and found out the next day that he was a perfect match for our family!! We picked Finn up on 3/19 where I was greeted with an immediate "hug" and smothered with "Finn kisses." He is an amazing dog gentle and affectionate, yet very playful and goofy! Every day we see new personality traits coming out in him, as well as his growing level of trust and acceptance of us. He has definitely become a huge part of our family and returns the love he receives. What a great feeling! Adopting a Greyhound is something I had wanted to do for 20 years and I cannot believe it has finally happened!

Thank you to Make Peace With Animals for allowing us to adopt Commando Paul, now Mark, despite us being far out of your normal adoption area. When we made the initial call to inquire about him after seeing him up for adoption we did not think we'd actually be given a second thought considering we are up in Toronto, a long 9 hours away. Thank you for being so thoughtful as to drive him a little ways closer to us to shorten our drive, and thanks to all the really great people who we dealt with in bringing him home here to be reunited with his littermate Commando Rob. They are the best of buddies, and are being spoiled rotten in their retirement.

I was looking at the "I found a home" section of pictures and was loving all the beautiful greys who are now couch potatoes! What I love even MORE is that amongst the many greys is a cutie black cat who also found a home! I have 7 cats of my own along with my 3 greys, and I think it is WONDERFUL how Make Peace really loves all animals! Make Peace, KEEP up the great work that you do for the greys and for all animals in need!

With the Super Bowl fast approaching, it is also a special day for us. It will be one year that we welcomed our beautiful boy Gunnar into our family. It was a tough start for him, being scared to death of everyone and everything. But now a year later he is a happy little boy. Time, patience and lots of love was all it took to bring his true personality out. He still has a number of quirks, but that is his personality and we love him so very much just the way he is, in our eyes he is perfect.

I just wanted to thank you all again for being willing to help the lost little greyhound that showed up at my door today. I called on a Sunday morning, and got a very friendly helpful lady(sorry, didn't get a name) that started searching your database for this little girls home. Fortunately, the owners were found by our security guards here in my community. However it sure was an awful lot of comfort to me, that MPWA was so willing to help a total stranger find this poor lost girls family. You guys are awesome!! And if I can ever talk my husband into another canine companion to join our already very full brood of four Great Danes and four human kidsŠ.I think I'd really like to adopt a greyhound. This one that visited was a real charmer while she was here and even though she was only here for a couple of hours, she's going to be missed!! Take Care!

I would like to express my gratitude to everyone at Make Peace with Animals. If it weren't for all of you, I would not have my best friend, my sweet boy Dreamer ( formerly A.J. ), in my life, which is something I can't imagine. Inside & out, he is beautiful & has given me more than I can put into words. I love him.
He has so much fun with his stuffed animals & gets so excited when I slowly call his name- in sort of sing- song fashion- & slowly take out a new one, or if it's in wrapping paper- he absolutely understands it's a new baby all for him. He is like an innocent child opening it, then tucks it under his gloriously long chin! Just adorable! He's been with me for 5 yrs. He will be 10 yrs. old in feb. and is a very stunning black greyhound. Oh & what a riot to see the female dogs in the building with him! Suffice it to say they know tall dark & handsome when they see it!! peace & best wishes to all of you!

Just sending a warm holiday greeting to all at MPWA for all the hard work you do during the year to help our beloved greys. Without your efforts we would not have our wonderful pets and companions this holiday season. Special thanks to Cynthia and Jackie for our Basil and Holly.

Just want to say "Hi, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" to all my friends and my special guardian angel. A year and nine days ago I came to live with my Mom, Dad, Doc and Magic. What a year it has been! I have my forever home and family now and I am such a good boy (My Mom and Dad tell me this everyday). I went to classes and wowed them all with how I can work. Life is good when you love and are loved. My family sends their greetings and love, too.

Wow, Pat what a close call! You are so lucky that he listened to you. Unfortunately, in the right situation, they can back out of a martingale collar. It's best to keep those collars cinched up tight. The best thing one can do for their dog is work some basic obedience with them and train them a command such as: "Stop", or "Wait". I use wait even when we're out walking, to cross a street. It did save me once in a similar situation when Ohenry got loose. He stopped in his tracks when I yelled wait.

I'm writing this as a word of advice to anyone having a greyhound that is a spook, meaning one that will panic when frightened by a loud noise or something that is unfamilar to him. I had my worse nightmare come true last week, my youngest boy Gunnar was able to back out of his safety collar while out for a walk. There was some cardboard laying flat on the sidewalk that I didn't see in the dark, all three of my boys stepped on it at the same time and it made a loud crunching noise. Gunnar panicked and pulled so hard he pulled out of his collar and ran. I yelled for him to stop, and to my surprise he did just that, on my neighbors lawn. I was very lucky he listened and he actually started to walk back toward me as I approached him. I slipped his collar back on and knelt down on the grass and hugged him and told him what a good boy he was, walked my three boys home and then went out and purchased a harness for him. I think I aged 10 years in that moment he ran. So please, just a word of advice, if you have a greyhound that tends to panic in certain situations outside the home be aware that they can slip out of their collar. Gunnar never leaves the house now without his harness on.

Yesterday, with the help of Rita Tripodi, my wife Carol and I picked up Spicey, aka Zydeco Spice, from her foster family in Peddler's Village. I want to tell you how happy we are having Spicey as a part of our family. She had a quiet night last night. When she want's to go out, she quietly stands by the door. She's eating well. There have been no accidents. The foster family did an excellent job with her. All of us are off to a good start. Thank you for the good work that you do. Very truly yours,

We welcomed Bones into our home on 11-06-04. We received him for Charles, Cynthia Branigan's husband, who was a real gentleman and a very nice guy. I have had Bones a little over two weeks now and couldn't be happier. He is well mannered and a joy to be around. He has also filled the large void left when our thirteen year old Jack Russell died. Adopting Bones was one of the best moves we ever made. It's amazing how kind and gentle these dogs are. I would recommend adopting one to my friends. Thanks again for a great friend.

MPWA would like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the very kind gentleman that stopped by at the PetCo-Milltown, N.J. MPWA Meet'n Greet table last Saturday-10/16/04. Forgive me if didn't catch his name properly, but I believe that the generous fellow said that his name was R.(Ralph?) Levy. Mr. Levy donated two large bags of gently-used comforters that we will put to good use for some of our foster dogs. We can all appreciate the fact that we know the greyhounds love their comfort! Pam and I would like everyone to know that there are many ways to help, even if you can't adopt right now. When some people stop to pet our M&G volunteer greyhounds and engage in conversation with Pam and I, sometimes we get comments like..."we have X-amount of dogs now. We can't adopt." A good thought to share is that, like this kind gentleman's comforter donations.... The greyhounds, or even your local animal shelter if that is your preference, would very much appreciate blankets or towels if you are discarding gently-used comforters or towels. Again, thank you on behalf of the newly retired fostered greyhounds that will get to use your great comforters. Agnes Paulus with greys-Rocky and Gus, and Pam Congersky with greys-Dante and Annie! We hope to see you next month at the MPWA M&G PetCo-Milltown, N.J.!

Almost two years ago, November 10, 2002, we met Smiley Riley. She came to us after the passing of our beloved Pandy, who had traveled 50,000 miles with us in our motorhome. We thought that we would go a year or at least six months after Pandy's departure to dog heaven before we would get another traveling companion. That time period quickly reduced itself to three months. We contacted Cynthia from Myrlte Beach, SC, and said we needed another greyhound ASAP. Our main reuirement was a dog that was a good traveler, since we are "full timers" in our motorhome. On the way back to PA we made a stop at Cheatam Annex, a Navy base near Williamsburg, VA. Cynthia called us and said she had a dog for us. We cut our stay short so that we would be sure to make it back to PA to get our dog.

Little did we know or suspect just what kind of a greyhound she would be! Our first dog, Dorie, was a beautiful silver fawn color, a little aloof and a real princess. Our second, Pandy, was a pretty black gryhound who had obviously been abused at the track. It took her almost a year to trust all of the members of our family. But what a sweetheart she turned out to be! Now there is Riley - Smiley Riley. Our gorgeous brindle girl. She talks! She howls! She barks! To say the least, she is very vocal. She likes people food - steak, lobster, etc. - more than she likes dog food. And does she ever like people!! Large people, small people, old people, young people and she is definitly race and nationality blind when it comes to giving kisses and carrying on a conversation with anyone who wants to talk with her.

She is an OUTSTANDING travler and has covered many thousand miles with us in our motorhome from Maine to Florida (including Disney World), from the east coast to Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah. She has been to the Grand Canyon and to Yellowstone, Montana, the Dakotas, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and many states in between. She has seen (and smelled) a great portion of the Lewis & Clark trail. And, in all her travels she has made hundreds of people friends, who know her by name and have been recipients of her kisses. Many people who had never seen or heard a Greyhound have seen one now. What a great representative of the greyhound breed she has been! THANK YOU Cynthia for finding the perfect dog for us and our traveling lifestyle.

Just a note to Thank you once again for all your help with Ginger (GreekAlpha). Our new baby had a rough start in the beginning of her retirement,(due to illness), but it is almost six months since Ginger is with us, and she is a well adjusted, well mannered, happy, funny, loving, and loyal member of our family. Ginger is our very first Greyhound, and we couldn't be happier. She gets along well with her two cat sisters. Ginger's favorites include: pigs ears, stuffed animals, and sleeping in bed with any one who will let her. She also loves running and playing with her human brother--Zac. She is the most affectionate dog I have ever had. We can't wait to see you at the homecoming! Thank you for everything!

Just wanted to wish our boy Morris a happy 11th birthday. Even though age is beginning to take it's toll and you don't run quite as fast or as often you are still as smart and shrewd and handsome as ever, and of course you are and always will be the boss. Happy Birthday Mo Man, we love you so much. Love and Kisses Mom, Dad, Pete and Gunnar

We adopted Ms. Pacman on Palm Sunday, 2004. She is now answering to her new name, Trixie. What a wonderful animal. Her favorite things to do are play catch, run like crazy, and sleep with her stuffed toys. Thank you for bringing her into our lives.

Just wanted to let Cynthia Branigan know how much I appreciate the episode about "Baker & Elbert" on Animal Planet's Pet Story. I saw that and was hooked. I contacted my local rescue, which is Greyhound Rescue & Adoption/Utah chapter, and my 'rep' Sherry Chandler and her husband Michael found me Katie(Mg's Poco Katie) & Jack(Flea Bite) retired from a track in Colorado. They are the perfect dogs for our family and lifestyle, and in The Chandlers I have made life long friends and am now doing my own Meet-n-Greet at our local Petsmart and also interviewing potential adopters.
Thank you for being such a special and inspiring person!!!!

A very Happy Birthday to our girl, Zygmunt (racing name: "Miss Rocker") who is 15 today (June 22).
And today is also the one year anniversary of the adoption of our little "NelsonEddy" the would-be Afghan Hound from the piney woods of Virginia. Finally, today also marks the one-year passing of dear Padillac, a noble Halfghan Hound. We'll never forget you, Paddy! I wonder how the stars were aligned last year at this time for so much to have happened simultaneously...

I just wanted to send a quick "thanks" to everyone at MPWA. We adopted our first grey - Murphy (formerly Our Slick) on 2/29/04. He's been a wonderful addition to our family - we couldn't have asked for more!!! A special thanks to Cynthia for starting this great organization and to Dawn for helping us through the adoption process.

Two months ago we added a beatiful boy named Gunnar, aka Reb's Gunner to our greyhound family. We knew when he came to live with us that he was a bit of a spook, very timid and basically afraid of his own shadow. The first few weeks were tough for him and we were afraid we were going to have a dog that lived in the bedroom and only came out for meals, there were a few times when I served him his meals in the bedroom when he was having a rough day.

We deceided not to force him to do anything that made him uncomfortable, figuring if we let him have the time and space he needed he might learn to trust us. He has been with us now over 2 months and has blossomed into a happy, playful 85lb. puppy. He is very willing to learn and even knows a few commands using voice and hand signals. My point is, some greys fit right into a home situation and others take a little more time, but with patience, understanding and lots of TLC they can all learn to trust.

Thank you Cynthia for entrusting this little soul to us and thank you Kathy for giving Gunnar a great start in the right direction.

With must continue to show the hounds the love they deserve.

Our dear boy Wonder crossed the Rainbow Bridge on December 10, 2003. He was one month into his eighth year. He brought so much joy in the almost five years he was a member of our family. It was an honor to have had Wonder as a member of our family and to share a part of his life. We would like to thank Make Peace With Animals for making it possible to have known this gentle and loving 'Grey'. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

First of all I'm glad Tigger got a home just in time for Christmas. Secondly, I would like to thank Suzanne and Scott for the wonderful, no make that beyond wonderful job they did fostering my Skittles. She is sweet, spoiled and one of the highlights of my life. You guys made it possible (along with all of the incredible people, at 'Make Peace' ) for Pugs and myself to have another great dog in my home. I tried to e-mail you guys twice but I still didn't have right e mail address, also didn't want to bug Dawn again. Just wanted to wish everyone at Make Peace a happy and safe holiday and thank them for all the time and effort they spend finding these wonderful dogs forever homes. Who would have thought 13 years ago when we adopted our first greyhound that our lives would be changed forever. Life without a greyhound is like a day without sunshine. Thank you Make Peace, we feel privileged to be a part of your greyhound family. Wishing everyone a GREYT and happy holiday.

We would like to send our most sincere 'Thank you' to all who have helped Tigger in his quest for his forever home. Cynthia, Amy and Jim, Jackie, Janis, Michele, Lorraine, Marc and Susan, are wonderful people who have helped him and I am sure there are many others that we don't know of. He is a wonderful boy and has adapted to his new home in record time. We are so fortunate to be able to share our lives and home with him. Happy holidays to all Greys and Grey lovers the world over.

Happy Holidays!
During this Holiday Season, I just wanted to take a minute to thank everyone at MPWA for giving us Skip and Tawnya. Skip came first in Feb. 2002 at just under 5 years old, with Tawnya following soon after in May 2002. When Skip got mysteriously ill in Summer 2002, Jackie Wright Minogue generously came forward and helped us get a 2nd opinion from her vet in North Jersey. Skip fully recovered and has been doing great. Tawnya recently had an incident where one ear needed many stitches to repair it(No Skip, its not supposed to come off!) But this has been the only accident. She came through the repair like a trooper. They are both doing fine and have made a greyt addition to our household. We could not ask for better dogs/companions and what a joy to watch them race around the yard! Again, Thank you for giving us the opportunity to give these 2 a home and have a terrific New Year!

SANTA TO VISIT OUR GREYHOUND CENTER
Santa Paws will be making his third annual appearance at Make Peace With Animals' International Greyhound Center, 5755 Old York Road (Route 202), Holicong, PA on Sunday, December 7 from 11-3. We're halfway between New Hope and Doylestown and about a mile south of Peddler's Village. For a modest fee, you can have your dog, cat, or any kind of critter photographed with Santa. Photos will be presented in holiday-style cards and all proceeds benefit the Greyhound adoption program of Make Peace. A volunteer photographer will also be on hand to create photos of your pet (or you and your pet) for sweatshirts, t-shirts, mugs, or 2004 calendars. Make Peace also has a new assortment of Greyhound-size plaid winter coats and an array of fine ornamental collars, just in time for the holidays. As always, adoption representatives will be happy to answer your questions about adopting a racing Greyhound. Punch and cookies will be served free of charge, and all visiting pets will get a treat from Santa's bag of goodies.

A hearty thank you to all of the Greyhounds who participated at this year's NYRA Fall Festival at Belmont Park: Jazz, Bo, North Star, Jimmy, Sunny, Angel, Cozmo, Blackjack, Sushi, Monica, Amory, Allie, Tut and Tally-Ho. And,of course, to their human volunteers. What a team! Together, we all made it happen. Special thanks to Herman and Trevor, who are still looking for a home, and to Brendon and Tweed who gave up this opportunity to give Herman and Trevor the spotlight. And, very special thanks to Gina Toner, who made it all possible. It was a wonderful weekend and hopefully will open the door for a few more ex-racers who are just awaiting their opportunity for a real life of security, love and happiness. They all deserve as much and more. We look forward to doing it again next year!!!
Marc and Susan Dralus, Williston Park NY

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated an item to the Silent Auction at this years' Homecoming. Your heartfelt generosity is greatly appreciated by all of us and especially by the Greyhounds who will ultimately benefit from it. If there was a way to thank each and every one of you personally, we would do so in a heartbeat. Also, thank you to the rest of the volunteers who made up the silent auction team - Deb Lipartito, Leslie Mammele and Larry Settle. You guys were GREYT!! We can't wait for next year!

Thanks so much to everyone for putting this Greyt event together again.......This was the 7th year coming to the homecoming and the 1st year my husband and I helped out where needed, but it won't be our last to help, everyone had all under control and it was nice meeting everyone that we have corresponded with but had not yet met......and the ones that we get to see again every year....how nice to see you all again........A really nice, fun and very helpful group of folks....... If there is anything else we can do throughout the year please keep us in mind, we want to help where ever we can to give back to the group (and the hounds) that has given us the wonderful souls we call our kids......... Thank you all and God Bless,

Chuck and I would like to "Thank" Jackie for arranging the adoption and to Dawn for meeting us half way to pick-up our little girl "Lucy" formerly known as Paisley. She and her Golden brother Jethro are doing well on their first full day together. Jethro is soooo excited to have her around. She is so sweet and gentle I can see why grey lovers have more than one. I can't believe a dog pretty much fresh off the track acts so well in the house as if she's lived in one for years. She's our first...I know she won't be our last. Big hugs,
Chris, Chuck, Jethro and Lucy (aka Paisley)

Hi everyone! It's me Lowell the Greyhound. I just wanted to let you all know how things are going in my forever home. My uprights love me so much. And I love them! They threw me a birthday party. I got presents!!!! And a ground beef cake! I got lots of stuffed animals but my favorite gift was a red heart tag that says Lowell...I am loved. and my phone #. My mom says I have to have a couple of ID tags. My Old English Sheepdog sister got me a present too! A new hoof!! I'm loving it here. I go for walks and now don't even worry about taking care of business while we walk. I play outside and go for rides to all different places. Lahaska is pretty cool to walk around. I have gone to some Greyhound events and I even went to an Old English Sheepdog rescue picnic! It was so much fun. Everyone admired my sleek bod. Well, thanks to Make Peace for finding me a home that I love with people that love me!!!!! Lowell Saltzman (that's my new name!!!)

It's been over a month since River came to live with us. What a wonderful dog and fabulous addition to our family. We couldn't have asked for a better companion for our dog Scarlett and cat Oscar. It's about 1 year since we adopted our boy Kevin and I just wanted to say thanks to Make Peace. He’s such a wonderful baby. He’s brought us so much joy, he is the ultimate Velcro dog, loves his squeakie toys, loves long walks, and especially just laying on the couch with mom and dad. Our families and friends adore him and we take him everywhere. Our 3 cats would also like to thank you for giving us such a low key, friendly dog. I don’t think I could say that the kitties actually LIKE him, but they definitely tolerate him well. Thanks!

I just want to wish a Happy 12th Birthday to our spunky little greyhound girl, Sweetie! She's been a part of our family for 1 year now! Ed and I are constantly amused by her energy, her antics and her cute expressions (except for the barking to go outside at 6:30am and bringing me the baby groundhog as a present!). We love her bouncing gate, her straight-up ears, her wide-mouthed smile when she's running through the yard and her 360 degree circle dancing when it's time to go outside. We know Dabney and Reo enjoy her company, too. Thanks, Ashley, for clarifying Sweetie's birthdate as August 1. We knew it was in August (1991, actually), but did not know the exact date. We hope to have many more fun years with our little, barking ball of fire! Happy Birthday Sweetie!

Hi Everyone - We wanted to send out a special thank you to Dawn, Joanne and Cynthia. Within the past year, we've adopted two greyhounds through your organization, and our lives will never be the same again. Jack came to us at 3 years old last November and turned our household upside down. Earlier this year, we noticed Jack seemed unhappy, so we decided another greyhound might do the trick. Baby joined our home last month at 4 years old, and we've been one big happy family ever since. Jack and his new girlfriend BARK at everything, throw their stuffies all over the house, take over the couch and our bed, and keep our cats on their toes. I'm sure with four cats, Cynthia had a hard time selecting a dog she felt sure went well with our home. Instead of one - she managed to give us two perfect matches. Thank you Cynthia! And to Dawn and Joanne, thank you for seeing us through the rough times. I never expected so much support. Oh - and thank you for bringing our new children to us. We'll never forget everything you've done!

Our little Tara loves her Rodeo very much, but the old boy is getting up there in age ,and doesn't want to spend to much time running around the yard with her any more. She told us the other day that she was bored, and alittle depressed,as she had no one to run and play with, and would like it if we could find her a girl friend(large or small) to run the three quarter acre fenced in ,wooded lot with her.She wants a female dog,-easy going- who loves to take long walks, loves music, loves to run and is playful, friendly and isn't afraid of being the new girl on the block! Color is unimportant.Age: between 2-3 years old. Must be willing to be spoiled, loved and cherished. Should be good with other dogs.We have no cats, only "Lorro" our blessed parrot. She said she thought "Aunt Cynthia" was the one who could get the job done, and we do too!. Love marge,Bill ,Rodeo, Lorro and--------- tara!

My husband and I can't say enough about how much we love our dogs. We have three rescues all together, a mutt from Athens, Greece, a rescued English foxhound from a hunt club, and our beloved Greyhound. This is our second Greyhound, as unfortunately our beloved Cannon (the first one) passed away in 2001. Buddha our new guy is oh so loving and we cannot say enough wonderful things about him. Keep up the great work to educate the public about this wonderful breed. YR Long Island, NY

Thank you for pairing up Grant with our family. After the loss of our Cairn I really wasn't looking for another dog. The greyhounds really stirred up an interest and after meeting w/Michelle and her baby we fell in love. Grant has brought us much joy, love and laughter. My husband walks Grant as his proud dad and the dog is his shadow. He's a real snuggler and mush which we just love. We eventually will be fencing in our yard just for our baby boy Grant. PS he too hates his crate. He sleeps w/us at nite but needs to go in the crate during the day time. Hopefully he won't have to eventually. Thanks for the work and great job you all are doing. To Rich Preach, We totally lost touch with you, so please accept our condolensces on the passing of your beloved Husker. Husker was a great guy, with the best set of "reach to the sky" ears we've ever seen, and was full of fun and mischief everytime we met him. He is now running at the Bridge with many new friends.

Andy (aka: Mr. Prince, because he's so regal) update: My beautiful boy has now learned to sit and stay and wait. He also has figured out that if he touches my nose with his, he gets a treat (if we're playing that game). He is a perfect dog. He even released a dead squirrel he picked up when I told him "drop it". I was shocked! Thank you so much for selecting him for me. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

Make Peace With Animals is now a member of Petfinders.com. As a member, you can now obtain pet insurance for any newly adopted pet. You must sign up within the first 2 weeks after getting your dog and you will be entitled to the first 2 months paid for by Petfinders. With the high cost of veterinary care, this could be a huge savings. For more information, contact Jackie at jwgreyhnds@aol.com

The show, put on by Saks 5th Ave, was in honor of Janine Dion, founder of "Pet Peeves". Like my personality, my nine year old retired greyhound Frazzle is still his pleasing pleasant, amusing character, and personable self. He is my lifeline and I am his. In my wildest of dreams I never thought Frazzle would make the most positive impact in my life. As I am a positive person, we add to the fun, joy, and kind existance of everyone we meet. I have taught him some fun tricks that he so graciously performs at either the vets (for a check up) or at the Meet and Greets we attend for our group. To all of the volunteers and Cynthia at Make Peace with Animals, Frazzle and I thank you for your mission and your existance with humane hearts and loving ways.

I was just passing through and thought that I would stop and say Hi to all of you fellow Greyhound owners. We got our Suzie in October of 2002, and she is the best thing that I have ever done not only for her but also for me. Although I may live in Maine I can relate to all of you who have had the pleasure to own and know the kind of love that owning one of these wonderful animals can give you. I absolutey love her and wish that I could have a dozen more but the size of our home restricts that so until we get a bigger house we'll just have to settle for one. I think your adoption program is great. We adopted a greyhound about 3 years ago, and he was very shy and scared when he came home, but through the years he has come to love his family, and realized what love really is. His racing name was " To the wild Forest ", we just love him with all of our hearts and would never want anything to happen to him. Thank you, " make peace with animals"!

Hi! Both Sushi and Twiggy were adopted by their foster families. We are glad they found such good homes, but there is a down side: we have lost two more foster homes because they no longer have room for transient guests. I urge anyone out there looking at our web site in the future to please consider adopting a Vintage Greyhound. Without exception, these dogs are well-adapted to home life, they have that special depth to their character that only older dogs have, and they reward you with endless gratitude for your kindness. And, by the way, we are always looking for new foster homes to replace those we have lost. Please contact us at the web site if you are interested--we have a training program and an extensive support system. All we need is you!

It has been 1 week since we adopted Lowell. What a wonderful dog. He is so sweet. Everyday brings new experiences for him. We have found his tickle spot and he loves to have it rubbed. When we stop- out goes the paw for more! Today he learned he can go in and out of his crate at will. He kept going in - then out for a good 10 minutes. He was so pleased with himself. He follows Daisy, our OES, around and does whatever she does. It's just great seeing him blossom. Thank you for such a good boy.

A quick update on Callie and Lomax. . . They came to our home on Saturday and we put them in my office room where some of our quiet/shy cats stay. These are the ones who can be intimidated by some of our more outgoing cats (They can sit on the bed, window seat or cat tree without being bullied). Yesterday, Callie decided she was ready to explore the house and spent the day meeting her new friends and playing with toys. Last night she slept next to me and Tildy (greyhound). Lomax stayed under the bed (with Patches and Muffin who comforted him) over the weekend. However, this morning, Lomax was sitting on my desk looking for a "good face scratch". Looks like everyone is settling in just fine!

Hi! I can answer Natalie's question about what happened to the "I Need A Home" page. First of all, we discovered to our dismay that many people were 'shopping' for dogs and wanted them based solely on the dog's appearance. We knew this because in many cases the description would say something like "not cat safe" and the potential adopter would have cats, or "needs a fenced yard" and the potential adopter would have an apartment in the city. Over and over the same thing happened--and we also found that the youngest dogs were in great demand while people overlooked the somewhat older ones, or ones who had physical or emotional challenges. When we would explain that the dog they chose was not the right one for their situation, some people became irate. This happened not once, but many times. Additionally, there were unpleasant instances of several people wanting the same dogs and then complaining bitterly, often abusively, because the dog went to someone else. We do not base our adoptions on a first come, first served basis, but rather, on the most appropriate home. Finally, we were getting people from all over the country wanting to adopt our animals, and we do not believe in placements beyond a few hour's drive. We, of course, have dozens of available Greyhounds at any given time. We also often have available dogs with us at regularly scheduled Meet and Greets or at our Center every Sunday. We also have two new categories: Dogs of Distinction/ Cats of Character, which highlights animals who have the above-mentioned physical or emotional challenges, or who are simply not Greyhounds! The other new category is Vintage Greyhounds which, as the name suggests, profiles Greyhounds aged seven or older who, in our opinion, are every bit as loveable and worthy of a home as are the youngsters! Thanks for your interest--and check out those new categories! -Cynthia.

In England I am a supporter of Greyhounds in Need, which looks after the welfare of ex-racing greyhounds in (mainly) England, Ireland and Spain. Some of the stories you read and the pictures you see would break your heart. How people can treat these gentle animals, and all animals, in this way beggars belief. Well done for all the work you in the States are doing. Long may it continue. I myself own a Veteran, crazy, spoilt Dobie and a young, crazy, spoilt show whippet.

Hi! Yes, at the last minute, a kind (and well-qualified) soul came forward offering to make Jason's last years his best years. I have been very touched and impressed by everyone who offered to take in these poor animals. I know there must be millions of other cases like theirs, but, due to the personal connection, we just had to get these dogs and cats into new homes. After they get settled in, we hope to post photos of everyone with their new families. A while ago I wrote and asked for advice on how to help my boy Pete get over his fear of walking on tile floors. Sucess at last, we had a vet appointment the other night and after a little struggle getting him through the door he noticed a cute little female greyhound waiting to see the vet, low and behold he pranced right across the floor over to her as if he were walking on carpet, he was even doing his little happy dance and flashing his smile showing no fear of the floor. We will try Pet Smart next, I 'll take him to a Meet and Greet, hopefully there will be a cute little girl there so he can show off again.

Hi! Me again. This time I want to wish our tall, dark and handsome brindle boy, Reo ("Twilite Reo") a happy 7th birthday today! Reo was our second adopted greyhound and a real live wire when he came off the track. He is our high prey, ball-loving, fun guy when he's outside and our sweet, cuddly, velcro boy when he's inside. He has brought so much energy and excitement into our lives from the day he arrived here as our 4th MPWA foster. He was so curious, happy and fearless, wanting to see and do everything - the complete opposite of our first girl, Dabney. We thought his personality would be the perfect addition to our home. And we were right! A day does not go by that we don't smile at something cute or silly that our big, tall, lanky boy does. He loves his family and follows us around like he's our shadow, occassionally head butting us or bumping into us if we stop short in front of him. He always welcomed any new fosters into our home, bonding with them and even sharing his beds with them. He loves his fenced yard, is crazy about his toys and is always ready for action. His favorite pasttime is chasing and running around the yard with one of his "prizes" (balls, toys, etc.) showing them off to everyone as he flies by, then taking a break between laps to refuel and eat apples that fall from one of our apple trees. Reo also has a buddy - a huge buck - that he chases out of our fenced yard when he's eating apples off of HIS tree. Inside, he loves to curl up next to Ed on the couch and just be the best, most cuddly companion to all of us. We just love him and are so happy to have him in our lives! Happy 7th Birthday, Ree Ree - and many more happy, healthy years with us! Love, Mom, Dad, Dabney and Sweetie

My husband and I are very interested in adopting a greyhound. We have been talking about it for the past few years. But as of right now we feel we are just not ready to have another addition to our family. We already have a thirteen year old chihuahua, a one and half year old chihuahua, an eight year old poodle and a very snobbish fourteen year old siamese. We are very interested in retired greyhounds and will continuing checking out websites till we are ready to adopt.

I just want to wish our beautiful fawn brindle girl, Dabney ("Dabney Ritz"), a happy 8th birthday today! Dabney was our first adopted greyhound and she's the one who started our love for the breed and launched our interest in rescue efforts. She is such a special girl and we love her very much! She was our shy, timid girl when she came to us over 4 years ago, but has come way out of her shell since then and just loves life. She has so many cute traits - her tail spins in a circle like a helicopter when she is happy, she prances back and forth joyfully with a toy or the "muddy paw towel" when she wants to get our attention to go outside, she "sings" to the Action News theme and other various tunes (leading Reo into song as well and Sweetie into barking backup), she cockroaches in the sun on her puffy bed by the window and she absolutely loves people and thrives on any attention she gets. She is also the cookie queen, the bed queen and loves walks on a leash with us more than romping free in her fenced yard. She is obsessed with squirrels and keeps them on their toes at all times. Happy 8th Birthday, Dabney - we hope you have many more happy, healthy years with us! Love, Mom, Dad, Reo and Sweetie

This is in response to Sarah's 12/17/02 note. We adopted our 1st greyhound in late Oct. -- Dixie had been house broken too and all of the sudden she started peeing in the house. She really hates the cold so we thought that might be it. But we are seeing other behavior such as only wanting the same person to feed her... Dixie is quite the charmer... She is our only dog, but we have 3 cats... At this time getting a second dog is not an option. Is your problem any better? We would appreciate any tips....

Sarah, I have to agree with Cynthia and Liz, our first grey Chester was great the first 6 months, at the time we had our 13 year female Missy. Six months later we had to say good-by to Missy and that was when Chester started acting up. He started marking everything in sight, taking clothes and chewing them up including my daughter's basketball uniform, he actually pulled the table cover off my dinning room table, I was only gone 4 hours a day. I started putting him in the crate again but each day when I got home he greeted me at the door, he banged the crate door enough to straighten the hinges so the door would fall open, pretty smart. We deceided to adopt another boy thinking maybe he was loney and missed Missy. Along came Rembrandt and low and behold Chester was once again a gentleman. It will be 3years this Jan. since we lost Chester to cancer at age 11, his brother Rembrandt is now almost 11 and is quite happy since he will never be lonely because he has 2 brothers Morris and Pete to always keep him company. We never had an ounce of problems with Morris or Pete and I believe it was because they never felt stressed or alone.

Sarah, I adopted my first greyhound 2 years ago. He was not destructive, but did have some anxiety issues when we left him home alone. They actually got worse after about a year and a half. People thought we were crazy but we got another greyhound and it has been great. It took a few weeks for them to sort out their positions but since they have, things have been great! It's so much easier now, plus I have another beautiful dog to love! Good luck!

Cynthia, Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. My husband and I have talked about getting another greyhound, but he is reluctant since Ellis has been acting up lately. I will have to talk to him about fostering and see if he is open to that suggestion. We do have a wire crate, but are now planning on going out to get one of the airline crates. We exercise him quite a bit. Always a long walk in the morning before we leave and a long walk when we get home (15-20 minutes each). When we can, we take him to the local park and let him run around the basketball courts since they are fenced in and he can be off his lease. We are planning on putting a fence around our back yard within the next month, so I know that will help. We do have someone that comes midday to let him out. While we are gone we fill his Kong with peanut butter and leave the radio on the whole time. Plus, we leave his favorite squeaky toy with him. I will re-read your book to see what other tips I can pick up and hopefully put to good use. Plus, I will work on my husband about the fostering and possibility of adopting another greyhound. Thanks again for all of your help.

Doylestown, Pa USA - Tuesday, December 17, 2002 at 16:02:35 (CST)
Hi Sarah! One of the trickiest adoptions is placing a Greyhound who is to be an only dog. As I'm sure you know, dogs are pack animals, and while some actively want to be an only dog, most do not. This is often more pronounced in ex-racing Greyhounds as they were raised and kenneled with other dogs their entire lives before you adopted them. My first suggestion is to ask yourself if it is possible for you to adopt another dog. I know it sounds counter-intuitive that if you are having trouble with one, to get another, but it often does the trick! You could even try fostering one to see if it helps. Second, I recommend you re-read my book, which was included with your post-adoption kit. A few tquestions: what kind of crate is he breaking out of? Wire? That is usually the case. Airline (molded pastic) crates are nearly fool-proof. Are you exercising him adequately? Remember, a tired dog is a happy dog. Do you come home mid-day to let him out? If you can't do it, can you hire a service that can? Do you give him something to occupy himself in the crate (i.e. a hollow marrow bone filled with peanut butter). Do you leave music or a t.v. on for him? As I said, I think you need to re-read the book, then start from scratch. And please contact any of the dozen or so people whose names were on your post-adoption kit. We're eager to help you!

I am hoping that someone can help me out. My husband and I adopted a beautiful red brindle male named Ellis the beginning of September. He was behaving wonderfully until about one week ago. He has started to pick up shoes, slippers, remote controls, socks, anything but his toys and then he chews on them. He pulls gargabe out of the trash bins and tears into plastic bags and rips at books. In addition, he has started to go to the bathroom in the house, which is new behavior for him since we housebroke him rather quickly in September. We had stopped using the crate when we weren't home, (plus, he was breaking out of it, our little Houdini) but now I think that he has to start using it again since we can't trust him anymore. I can't think of anything that has changed to cause this destructive behavior. We had moved into a new house right before Halloween, but now we are settled in and I can't imagine that has anything to do with his behavior. Any suggestions or help that would be able to offer would be greatly appreciated. We love Ellis and want him to be happy, but I don't think that is the case right now since he is obviously trying to get our attention! Has anyone else had to deal with this type of situation? What did you do? Should I talk to the vet about this? Please help!

A Brief thank you to our Lehigh Valley Area volunteers for turning out on Dec 7th and 8th at the Phillipsburg Mall. It was a tremendous sucess and everyone had alot of fun. It was our fourth year there aand the Mall has been so kind to host us. Hopefully from all our efforts, some more greyhounds will be calling the Lehigh Valley home! Thanks again to all!

Hi I was at home this morning watching my favorite Channel, Animal Planet. I admit I was still in bed enjoying my morning coffee with my Greyhound Georgia at my side. I heard the announcement of Greyhound Fire and my heart stopped. I watched and could only imagine how they felt, loosing their 3 greys, and other pets to a fire. That is one of my biggest fears. Cynthia and Make Peace showed the public so much information regarding the greyhounds and the young couple were so informative and generous to let the world see what they went through. I remember well the photo from Celebrating Greyhounds Calendar. Cynthia, I have sat at the Memorial Bonfire at Dewey which you have hosted so many times. This year I lost my male Barrow "Tivoli Blue Duck" on July 9th, I see you just lost your Beloved Ajax. Thankfully I truly believe they are all running free off pain at the Bridge waiting for us all. Keep up the good work. Suzi Wrona - Mom to Georgia soon to be 12 & Bridge Mom to Barrow my heart dog.

Hi- I was in the area visiting relatives and I saw your Adopt A Greyhound sign and just had to stop. I am considering adopting one back home in Florida and I thought I'd see what kind of information your group offered. Everyone was so nice and helpful. Even though you knew I wouldn't be adopting from you, you all took a lot of time to explain what Greyhounds are like and what they need. I am very grateful as I got more helpful advice from you than I did from the group back home. Thank you again, I really appreciate it!

Allow me to introduce to you, my best friend, Jack. (Judge London) He was whelped on December 8, 1987. Jack came into my life and heart on a sunny Saturday, May 23, 1992. Jack was 4 & 1/2 years old. My first glimpse of him I can never forget. His bright brown eyes, cocky attitude, fawn in color, and a tilt to his head, he sized me up as if to say, "who is this stranger?" Quickly, Jack discovered my secret pocket of dog biscuits. I think that he knew at that moment that we would become fast friends. I loved him immediately. Jack was to become my third companion greyhound. I learned that Jack was missing a few toes from both of his rear feet. I was told that it would not hamper him or be any discomfort to him later in life. Which it hasn't. Jack is fit, active and up until the last few years he has been a MPWA Meet & Greet Volunteer. I am proud to say that Jack expresses affection to me by repeating all three of his "tricks," when I come back home. As soon as I open the door, Jack will either give me a "big bow," extend one of his paws in a "shake," or, I might get a "sit," in no particular order. In his excitement to see me, and my laughter at his ritual routine, Jack surely makes homecoming fun! Ever since our early days together, Jack has followed me around the yard like a shadow. If I should take a few steps, and then stop----Jack would walk right into the back of my knee with his nose. It goes like this, I walk and stop, I get a little bump in the back of my knee. I walk again, stop---and a little knee bump! If, when I am working in the back yard one of his most favorite places to lay and watch me is on the blanket in the van. Knowing this, I now have to lift Jack up and into the van so that he can nap and watch me work. Sometimes it only takes such a little thing to make him happy. I do this for him because I want Jack to know that I enjoy his companionship. Well, the reason that I wanted you to know a little about Jack is because tomorrow, December 8th, is Jack's 15th birthday! Happy Birthday, Jack! Give all your companions, whether skin or fur, a special hug in appreciation. Thank you. Agnes Paulus/MPWA Volunteer

We just wanted to wish our Irish boy Smiling Pete a happy 4th birthday. Of course we all had a Twinkie as a special birthday treat and Pete and his brothers Morris and Rembrandt had an extra special dinner. Thanks to everyone at Make Peace who worked so hard and opened their homes and hearts to Pete after he arrived in the US. I guess you can say we have the luck of the Irish because we were the lucky ones to have this sweet handsome boy join our family. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Pete, we LOVE YOU SOOOOOOOOOO much.

Hi everyone at Make Peace, I just wanted to let you all know that "Tino" has a new sister. We adopted her last weekend, things are going pretty good. She is a dominant female that came from a household of three Chihuahuas, I am sure it let to her dismissal. She is adjusting in to our household well, she has obedience and clicker training under her belt, and teaching Tino how to act like a gentleman. "Daisy" is a mirror image of Tino, so now we have IGs in stereo. Tino loves her and just wishes she had more of a sense of humor. He has put the "curl" back in her tail, and has her on a new exercise plan(she is a little over weight-but not for long). He is thrilled to have a new playmate to bounce.

Don't forget to go through igive.com when holiday shopping on the net. We have already raised $41.97 for Make Peace - Remember every little bit helps - 2% or 4% might not seem much but when a group of individuals shop it can add up. We have many "Senior Greys" who need our help - maybe you can't foster or volunteer in other ways - however registering with igive.com and making Make Peace with Animals your donation group is very easy. Make Peace With Animals will be at the Petsmart in Plymouth Meeting (Chemical Road) on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30 between the hours of 12 and 3. The manager has invited rescue organizations to "meet and greet" customers there as part of "Dog Awareness Week" to encourage adoption of dogs from rescue groups rather than giving puppies as gifts for Christmas. We will be there with our greyhounds, so please stop by! It's also a great chance to kick off your holiday shopping for your special furry friends.

I would like to thank Mary Layton and Cynthia Merkling for volunteering to hold M & G's at the Cherry Hill Petsmart. We are finally back there after a 3 year absence. Also many thanks to Lewann Lafferty and Dr. Nancy Denbow for helping out (Nancy looks great after her recent hip replacement - it was a surprise to see her out with her greys). We will post a schedule for Cherry Hill Petsmart on the Events page once we have it finalized. We gave out a couple of applications, and received some donations so I feel it was a success. Wiley and Gail did great for their first official job as Ambassadogs. Don't forget we are also at the Moorestown Petsmart with Joanne Deaner and Kim Branin on the last Sunday of the month. Anyone doing Holiday Shopping on the net can help Make Peace with Animals. It's easy - all you have to do is register under iGive.com, choose Make Peace as your designated group and shop at participating stores. A small percentage of the sale will be donated to Make Peace. Just shopping at two sites, one being Petsmart I was able to raise $11.81 for Make Peace. Doesn't seem like much but if more people do the same it could be a tidy little sum to help out the greyhounds. Mmmm now where can I shop next and still help the hounds!!!! Hello to all of you at "Make Peace with Animals"! It's been one year since we adopted our little baby, "Valentino" now known as "Tino". He was a strong willed, naughty IG that was neglected and abondoned until he was rescued by you at Make Peace. Today he lives a happy life with us, his family for life. He always greets people at the door with a traditional pog, as is truly a love-bug. He is totally spoiled 24/7 with love from our family of four, with his weekly doggie massage(this is actual massage)...and daily tronces with my daughter...daily raids on my children's stuff animals(he plays with the stuffed animals more than my kids do)...daily runs in our yard (playing in the sandbox) and when the day is done his nightly cuddles with his Mommy (and when Mom's not there...he takes Daddy). He is truly a wonderful spirit in our house, and there is never a dull moment. Thanks to Betty and the rest of you at Make Peace.

Mike, I feed my greyhound Nutro Natural Chicken and Rice (light green-blue bag). It has done wonders for his gas (it is almost non-existent). If you live close enough to the Makepeace center, you could buy Annamaet (excuse the spelling) there for a discount. There are many high-quality dog foods out there, just read the label and avoid fillers, by-products, soy (=gas) and high protein. Some other good brands I see people talk about on www.greytalk.com are Natural Balance and Canidae. Most people say that it is actually cheaper to feed the premium dog foods, because you feed them lesser quantities (which equals less #2 to clean up :) Good luck!.

Hello Every one! We adopted our dog from Make Peace just a few weeks ago. The kids have Renamed her "Dixie". Her 4th birthday is coming up. She is doing wonderful and surprisingly all three of our cats have accepted her --in one way or another!!! She must have been well taken care of - as she is healthy and has a good temperment. The only problem we have is if you call her she rolls over -- because she wants you to rub her belly!!! Dixie is our first greyhound and most likely will not be our last. She has been a little picky about what she eats. She doesn't seem to like Iams dog food -- we our slowly trying to switch her to Science Diet -- But I hear a lot of people use Pro Plan -- does any one have any suggestion????

To Pat Peirce In response to her question Oct 28th. Pat, make sure your dog's toenails are as short as they safely can be. My one girl, Ginny, is often scared to death to cross non-carpeted floors, but will after I have just cut back her nails. I've learned to keep after her nails constantly. When the nails touch the floor, the pads are not in firm contact with the hard floors - it must feel like ice skating to them! Another thing I do is take her collar and let her lean on my leg to cross a space of floor and hold her steady as she reaches the end. This avoids the last few steps of "scramble" where they hurry and scare themselves all over again. Try this along with the foot pad "wax" that Cynthia mentioned. and Good Luck!

I am sad to announce our dog Oreo has been put down. She was suffering from an auto-ammune skin disorder and she was just lathargic near the end. We had her for three years and those three years we gave her a better life. It is very deppressing but we know she is always with us the vet gave us her paw print in some plaster and we are getting her ashes so she will always be a part of her family. I am going to miss her but I know now she is out of her pain and she is at the rainbow bridge waiting for us to come meet her once again.

Hi Pat! As with any phobia, the idea is to slowly expose the dog to that of which he is afraid. Don't make a big deal of it as your anxiety will only add to his. You might try getting him to walk just a few feet across a smooth floor in order to get an especially tasty treat at the other end! Each day (or every other day) increase the distance just a little bit. The other thing I can suggest is something that works beautifully on my dog, Ajax. Before entering a room with a smooth floor, I spray a product called "Show Foot" on his pads. It prevents slipping and is made of non-toxic rosin (derived from tree sap). I purchased mine from Animal Magnetism, but I'm sure it is available elsewhere, too. Good Luck! Cynthia.

Hi to all, I was wondering if anyone has ever had a grey that is afraid to walk on floors. My youngest boy Pete flat out refuses to walk on any type of floors. I even have to take little throw rugs with me to the vet's office and get on my hands and knees throwing one in front of the other to get him to go in, of course everyone there gets a big laugh out of me on the floor putting one rug in front of the other to get him in, but I would love to be able to take him to places like Pet Smart and get a picture of all three of them together. If anyone has any suggestions on how to help my Pete get over this fear I would greatly appreciate it, my knees are killing me. THANKS!!!!!!!

Tara has been given new stuffed toys from our dog grooming shop, and is still a little shy to use them ,although she butted one with her nose ,as if to say "Well, that'll do in a pinch"!She hides from time to time behind this and that, but gave herself a grand tour of our place,inspecting- this and that- to asure herself everything met her rigid standards. I just wanted to ask all of you to please say a HUGE prayer for Chessa. My mom and I got Chessa from MPWA about 7 years ago and just Monday night the vet told us that she has bone cancer. Chessa is 11 and 1/2. We have an appointment with an oncologist tomorrow to confirm that diagnosis and talk about what we need to do for her but things don't look good. Chessa has been such an amazing companion for 7 years and she owes us NOTHING - we owe her the world, the moon and the stars and a promise to give her what is best for her. So many people have expressed their concern and support for us at this time and I thought that the more people praying for her, the better. We couldn't have imagined that we would hear the word cancer Monday night and now we are faced with a lot of choices that I would not wish upon anyone. Please keep Chessa in your thoughts and prayers. Mom, Chessa and Danielle

You are doing a fine and wonderful job and St. Francis is looking down on all of you with love. Keep up the good good and you shall be rewarded!!

I just wanted to wish our Morris a happy 9th birthday. Morris came to live with us after being turned back into Make Peace. Morris is our special boy since he suffers with epilepsy, but it has not slowed him down one bit. He gives his two brothers Rembrandt and Pete a run for their money and NEVER misses a meal. The boys all enjoyed Twinkies for his birthday and we celebrated the happiness and joy our boys give us everyday. Thanks to everyone at Make Peace and a special thanks to Cynthia for without them we would never have known the joy of living with and loving these sweet gentle creatures. Happy Birthday Mo Man, we love you sooooo much.

We adopted two wonderful hounds from MPWA about three years ago. I can't imagine our life without them. They are the best companions we could ask for. It has been a while since I have checked out the Make Peace web site, and wow what a change! What a great job you have done. Keep up the good work!

I fell in love with a greyhound named "Charlotte" - Charlotte was returned from a family who was getting a divorce - my friend Suzanne fostered her for about a month and she was turned over to her "new home". When we picked her up from the lady who was giving her up, her words to Charlotte were "thank you for being there for me". I wondered at that time why someone would give their "best friend" up because of a divorce - they weren't fighting over her custody!! Anyway, Charlotte went to her foster home for about a month and then to her new home - a few months later the woman who had adopted her called me. Charlotte had lost 15 pounds and after visits to the vet, they couldn't find out what was wrong with her. I agreed to go and visit Charlotte - she greeted us, but certainly was not a very happy doggie. I asked if I could take her to my vet to see if they could determine what was going on. We did the usual blood tests, etc. and found there was nothing wrong with her. I suggested that Charlotte remain with me as it appeared that she just didn't like her new home - and I had four other greyhounds who could comfort her - along with myself of course. Charlotte thrived and gained back her 15 pounds (and maybe a few more!!) - We had about 2 wonderful years together - Charlotte and me on the couch, on the bed, on walks and just being together. She was a beautiful greyhound whose love shined through her eyes as she gazed on her greyhound brothers and sisters, and on the people who truly loved her. On July 5, 2002, I had to make the decision to have her put down. It happened so quickly that day - she had thrown up her breakfast and had some diahrrea - I thought it could be the stress of our hotter than Hell summer, or that she was stressed about storms, which we had had prior to that day. Charlotte had been following me around - I noticed that she stayed close to me - perhaps she knew of her fate, in fact, I believe that she did. We got to our vet and had her x-rayed - she found a mass on her lung and her bowel was twisted and she also saw another mass in her abdomen. I made the decision to have her put down as she was in pain and the vet suggested that she probably would not live through surgery. As I laid on the floor with Charlotte to comfort her in our last moments together, I told her how much I loved her and that things would be much better over the rainbow bridge. I wanted to write this as a tribute to Charlotte, my best friend, how I loved you, and will always have a place in my heart for you. I look forward to seeing you again Charlotte.....enjoy your journey. Love, Mom, Annie, Freida, Jimmie, and Candy...... PS - it has taken me awhile to be able to write this - I had written about Charlotte at home, but found the need to share this story. Thank you for listening..........

When I adopted my Greyhound 6 years ago, I had no idea what life had in store for me. Since then, both of my parents have died, and my husband left me for another woman. I never thought of myself as a needy person, but the last few years have brought me to my knees. All I can say is, "Thank God for my Greyhound!" Without him I would have been completely without a shoulder to cry on. I am rebuilding my life now and I am finding that true love, unconditional love, does not just have to come from a human being--it can come from the most unexpected source, a dog! Thank you, Make Peace, for trusting him to him. I promise you, I will never let him down--he has saved my life!

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest family member, Sweetie! Sweetie is our "young" 10 year old (almost 11!) amputee who was recently returned to Make Peace With Animals and in need of a new home. I am thrilled to say that she now has that new home with us since she has officially accepted us as her family. Although she is the most "senior" member of our pack, she is just as active as our younger greys (and even more so at times). And she is just the light of our lives! Happy "gotcha day", Sweetie! We all love you! Deb, Ed, Dabney and Reo.

Hi, We adopted 2 amazing greyhounds from Make Peace With Animals. Exclusive Plan - Lexie we adopted almost 3 years ago, and Diagonal Lee - Lee almost 2 years ago. Lexie and Lee reside with a Dachshund and 2 cats as well, not to mention a horse who Lexie has met, Lee will be ready to meet him soon. Lee was incredibly shy, he is a bulk of a greyhound, built like a linebacker, but he is my angel. Lee has bonded with me like no other dog I have ever had. I am convinced he would do anything for me, he trusts me so much. Lee has a huge yard that he plays in daily with Lexie and the cats. Lee also goes for 2 "fun walks" a day and goes for car rides on weekends. It is simply amazing to watch a dog who was once so terrified of almost everything become a content and trusting dog. Thank You Make Peace for bringing Lexie and Lee into our lives. Also ENORMOUS thanks to Marc and Susan Dralus who have a knack for knowing where these dogs truly belong so they can be treated like royalty. Marc and Susan have been so wonderful to our family. Cynthia, as I told Marc and Susan, Lee is as playful as a puppy even though he turns 9 in December. He also loves bathes, being groomed, and toys that move and make noise. He also leaps and bounds like a bunny ! I can't say enough about him - he is so special. Thanks again ! ~*The Sidora Family*~

Hi! We just adopted a greyhound about one month ago and we are extremely pleased with our decision to adopt such a wonderful animal. We adopted her early in June 2002 and so far she has been a wonderful friend, family member, and gift to our family. We changed her name from Garden to Reba, since she did not seem to recognize her previous name. She put a cheerful expression on all of our faces and loves to play. She is our schnauzer's best new buddy. Maybe in years to come, we may have another addition to our family. We are so happy we have adopted her! Everyone should adopt one, two, or as many as they want! Thank You Make Peace With Animals!

We adopted Kevin, our first grey, last week from Make Peace with the help of a wonderful volunteer, Dawn. In the short time we have had him, Kevin has become an absolutely wonderful addition to our family. He is the most cuddly, loveable, fun, and goofy dog ever. He is great with our 3 cats, and even more surprisingly, they are great with him. We couldn't be happier with him.

Hi! In September 2000, we adopted our first grey from MPWA. Sunny (aka Misleading Note) has been a wonderful pet, and he's a big part of our family. After a few months, we decided to volunteer with MPWA as foster parents, and have really enjoyed the many greys who have been a part of our lives, even if only for a few weeks. We began to notice, however, that Sunny became upset each time a foster left for his new home. Because of this, we made a decision to adopt another grey. Two weeks ago, a little girl that we were fostering won our hearts (Sunny's too), and we decided to keep her. Angel (aka Lassie) officially became a part of our family on June 29, and we couldn't be happier. Over these past two years, many people have told us it's actually easier to have two greys than it is to have just one. We now understand what this means, and we agree totally! Sunny is so happy to have a new grey in the family, and we are so lucky to have her. Of course, we will still foster for Make Peace. We'll probably take a few weeks off, though, to get Angel fully acclimated to her new home.

We adopted a male fawn retired racing Greyhound, Brandywine, 7 years and 4 months ago in Lakeview, Ct. and had a wonderful life with him. Unfortunately he contracted cancer and was euthanized on July 5. We will be adopting again in a few months. We have 2 of Cynthia Branigan's books and became familiar with Make Peace With Animals through the books. Keep up the wonderful work. Greyhounds are the most wonderful, loving animals on earth and give back more than one can ever imagine.

To the Brokos family....very very sorry to hear about the loss of your Gigi. But know that with the loss of Gigi, another wonderful hound has been safely adopted. I found my baby 2 months ago and now she is living the life of a princess, just like your Gigi did. Her name is Dahalia and she is 3 yrs old. I took 10 days off of work to get her acclimated as she had only one week in foster care, and she has done beauftifully. Housebroken, great with kids, great with family gatherings, great with the other family dogs, loves to be brushed, is very good with the tooth brush and dremelling her nails.. not too bad in the crate when I leave...still howls a little, and best of all, she loves to smile and is even starting to do it when I prompt her. She is soooooo smart. The first hour she was here was the roughest, for me anyhow. We were outside and suddenly she yanked me off of my chair...I fell on the cement and banged my knee up pretty good and then she got away. Fortunately she got herself cornered on the neighbor's patio and I was able to catch her. I haven't run in 10 years, but you can bet I was running that time. She didn't 'bolt' when I met her at the track, like the other dogs did, when cut off the leash, so that was a big plus. She wanted to jump and play. I consider myself VERY VERY lucky to have caught up with her. No, I consider it a miracle. Dahalia will never replace Gigi, but know that she's already spoiled, just as I suspect Gigi was, and is enjoying every minute of it. What color was Gigi? Sincerely, anne

Gigi adopted our family 7 years ago. She came to our home when she was only 2 years old. From the very beginning she fit right in. She was always very loving and protective with us, and such a very well mannered young lady. She quickly became known as "The Princess". We lost Gigi just this month to primary osteocarsoma. She will always be in our hearts and we will never forget the complete and unconditional love and affection that she shared with us. I wholeheartedly recommend that anyone who is looking for a companion, that they adopt a greyhound. They will change your life.

For the past 11 years I have owned 2 adopted Greyhounds, one still living, Dotty age 13 yrs, and Fantasia, who 3 months ago at age 13, crossed the rainbow bridge. We are members of the Greyhound Adoption League, GAL of Tucson, a truly great and devoted group of people and an organization that has placed hundreds of Greys into loving homes. Hi! I adopted 2 brindle boys two years ago from Greyhound Rescue and Adoption of Tampa Bay. Their names are Nike and Reebok. Nike is the picture of good health and energy, but Reebok came to me with a rear leg that had been broken 4 times and a broken hip. After 5 surgeries to repair the leg, he developed osteocarcoma at the break-site and had to have an amputation. It has now been 6 months since the cancer was diagnosed and he is doing great on 3 legs...I consider it a true miracle!!!

He has adapted unbelievably quick to our home. I thank the foster family who had him for 2 weeks for starting his transition to family life as they did an excellent job. It was 1 year ago today (6/6) that we lost our baby boy, Bud-man, very suddenly to a stroke caused by a brain tumor. The key to acclimating a dog and children successfully is parental supervision. Nine times out of ten, when a dog growls or nips a child, the parent, or supervising adult, is not present. It is important that before anyone takes the big step of adopting to be honest with themselves about their willingness to supervise. Obviously, the more children you have, the harder is your job. It is unfortunate, but many people do not have the time, energy, or commitmant to this task as is required. Children cannot be expected to know what hurts and what doesn't--but an adult can. Unless the adult is willing to assume full responsibility for the interactions of children and dogs, then they should not adopt. By the way, Greyhounds are not more testy with children. In fact they are, as a rule, an extremely docile breed. But the same advice applies whether you are talking about Greyhounds, Dalmations, Chihuahuas, or any breed. If you can't supervise, don't get a dog.

We had a greyhound years ago when my children were very small, 2 and 4. The dog was extremely patient and gentle with them and never would she bite, but she did bark and walk away to let them know that enough was enough. No matter how many times you tell your toddler to be gentle, when your back is turned they always do something, even if it is unintentional. I would not recommend adoption to anyone with toddlers because of how the dog may be treated and because having a greyhound is a big responsibility and is almost like having an extra child. It was too much for me and we had to give her back to a rehoming organization, which was upsetting to me, but best for the dog. With children that are older it's a lot more fun and everyone can really enjoy the experience.

This is in response to the previous entry: there is no season for our acquisition, or adoption, of Greyhounds. The reason why you haven't seen any photos lately is that the dogs have been going out to homes nearly as soon as they have come to us. I am happy to report that "business" is booming! There are many days that I receive several calls from various race tracks asking if we can take dogs. If we had more foster homes (hint!) we would be able to help even more dogs. As it is, we are placing 15 Greyhounds into homes this week-end alone and all of the work is being done by dedicated volunteers and without the benefit of a kennel. So, if you are considering adopting, get your application in--we will probably be able to accomodate you soon!

Almost seven years ago we adopted a greyhound from the animal rescue league. We had planned to get a baby, but when we saw this one, our hearts told us this was the one. They said she was about five or six, and had been adopted many times by others. The problem--she climbed over the wood fence like it was not there. After we fixed the problem, she has been wonderful. She enjoyed visiting all the neighbors! We had an old Schnauzer, that later died. Then we got a Schnauzer baby. It was so funny to see the two of them together--she acted as if it were her baby. Phoenix, our Greyhound, cleans Hiede's ears many times a day. I was concerned about Phoenix and small children as I knew I would have a baby visiting. We had 25+ people for Thanksgiving with small children, and a crawling baby. The baby was all over Phoenix and she was wonderful. I was watching so the baby would not hurt her, but she was wonderful with the baby. I cannot imagine being without her. The funniest thing is to see her crawl out the pet door that was designed was Schnauzers! If you love dogs, you will LOVE Greyhounds! They are very clean, and adapt well to the house. Phoenix steals bread when she finds it left out of the bread box. We really enjoy her! She smiles at my son every time he comes in the house--he rescued her and she has not forgotten!

Hi everyone! I saw Agnes' post about needing meet and greet volunteers and had to respond. Dante and I have been doing the Milltown M&G with Agnes for quite a while now. Dante not only looks forward to it every month, but when we get to the store and I pull his bed out of the car he literally dances for joy. The people are wonderful, and we get so much information out to the public about these wonderful hounds. Its always the more the merrier at a M&G, so don't be shy - check out the schedule and visit a while with us! If you want to talk about it or want any questions answered feel free to drop a line, my email is rjc537@earthlink.net Hug those Hounds!

I just visited the web site and saw that one of the greys available for adoption is "Vulcan". My family had the pleasure of fostering him for about 1 1/2 months. I had to laugh when I saw that is name was changed. You see his track name was "Vulture". I think "Vulcan" is more suitable. It is true ,his ears do stand staight up when he has his eye on something. He would be a great addition to a loving family! Good Luck "Vulcan" aka "Vulture"

Our Beeny Hounds are up and running on ebay so I would like to take this opportunity to give thanks to a couple of fine folks whose help has been invaluable to this computer dummy. Ilona Paschen, a dog lover, animal advocate and long distance e-mail friend from the "Down Under" world of Australia has spent a great deal of her time providing me with technical advice and time-saving tutorials so that I could spend less time with the computer and more time with the greys! And Bob "Goat" Simonson here on Long Island is always offering ideas as well as answering my endless questions with his encyclopedic knowledge of anything regarding ebay. And thank you Larry for the photos. More Beeny Hound sales mean more funds to help our greys in need. Thank you all!

I just finished drying my eyes after watching the 'Pet Story' feature on Animal Planet featuring your organization. My big, goofy hound passed away just six days ago, and every day it is a challenge not to cry whenever I see his empty bed. I wanted to extend my sincerest condolences to Bill and Vanessa for their tragic loss. I wish you, and your organization the bes, and the hopes that more hounds will be adopted when people see just how wonderful they truly are.

We have had the great pleasure of sharing life with Greyhounds for twelve years. Thus far, there have been five of them. Three were exracers and have crossed the Rainbow Bridge - one at age 15, one at 12 1/2, and one at 13. These three died within a period of eighteen months. We were blessed in September 2000 with two rescued Greyhound puppies, then 3 months old. All of five of them have been tremendous companions - our children with four legs!

I adopted KCee 13 years ago. She didn't know how to work the stairs. They aren't use to them. We spent many days and hours learning how to work the stairs. After she learned the trick, I don't think she ever hit all the stairs anymore. She had a cat and another dog as her cousins. The cat and dog had passed, but she was ok. We then later moved from one state to another and she loved her new big home and massive yard. It was so good to see her have her freedom. She was so devoted and loved me so much. She is gone now. And the hardest thing to do was let go.

Adopted Jolly Molly on Oct. 6,2001. She was the ten year old that was no longer wanted. I saw her at the homecoming picnic. I already have a 12 yr old greyhound, Grania. So Molly fit right in. She has made a wonderful transition to her new home. Two is just as easy as one.

I love your web site. I am looking forward to adopting a Greyhound sometime in the future. I have an elderly cat who has serious health issues and my vet said it would be best not to introduce a new animal into our household. As she is very precious and will remain an only "child" for as long as she is stable and comfortable. I was saddened by the many messages about lost Greyhounds. I lost my 4-year old whippet, Duncan, 18 months ago. Despite my best efforts to protect him, he got Lyme Disease and died as a result. My broken heart has not mended. I was both comforted and saddened by the descriptions by others who have cherished family members. My heart goes out to you as I know how hard it is to be without a dear and precious friend. Teresa

I am looking for a greyhound to buy. If anyone has a greyhound for sale that is kind of close by, I'd be happy to talk it over with you. There is a 12 year old, a 17 year old, and 2 adults. So I need a greyhound that is good with kids. I have 2 other dogs, a playful golden retriever and a laid back black lab. I've dealt with many dogs that have many different attitudes, scared, mean, laid back, hyper, strong. I dog-sit my neighbors' dogs when they are away so I have a lot of experience with dogs of all types. I would like a greyhound 3 years or under, and of course kind of close by. I am very excited about getting one because they are my favorite type of dog. I love they're form. Please contact me if you have any information. Thank you, Kelly

Seven years ago we adopted our first greyhound, Regis. One year later we brought home our second grey, Risky. She was the most loving and affectionate animal I have ever seen. It was love at first sight! On Dec. 21, 2001 our Risky left this world. I am only now healing enough to talk about her without tears in my eyes. Everyone said that we gave her six years of happiness....I say she gave us six wonderful years of love and happiness. She will be missed but never forgotten.

I want to thank everyone at Make Peace and especially Cynthia for opening their hearts and homes to four Irish dogs that arrived here in April in desperate need of homes. We adopted Pete the smiling Irish greyhound after losing our Solomon to cancer at age four. Cynthia felt Pete would be the perfect boy to help us mend our broken hearts and so she was right. Thank you so much for caring enough to take these dogs that no one else wanted. If Pete could say thank you he would, instead he just keeps smiling.

You were the most special of my friends, found wandering, injured and unloved. You saved our greyhound Maurice from pining away after the death of his greyhound buddy Holling, and were Maurice's friend until he too passed away last summer. When I first saw you at the USA Dog rescue office YOU chose ME, running to me and hiding your head under my arm while shaking with fear. Two and a half years later the last thing you did before you were taken from me was hide your head under my arm one last time as I caressed your ears, kissed you and told you how much I loved you. Although we knew you were ill your death was sudden, though a blessing in disguise as you didn't have to suffer. Thank you, my sweet Joely, for your love, your kindness and patience. You were sent by God, and with him I know you're waiting until I come to meet you once more.

My husband Harold and I made a trip to see and learn more about the greyhounds in the early part of November. Everyone was so willing to answer any questions and share their experiences with their adopted companions. We thought about all we learned and I have read the book "Adopting the Racing Greyhound", plus I go to your web site almost every day. We met the Hamiltons from Ephrata that day and learned about an area near us that you can take your Greyhound to run. Thanks you, Hamiltons. We're pretty close to sending an adoption request to MPWA. I'll address two items here, the message about cancer and the one about toe amputation. Cancer seems to be very common in Greyhounds, but it really is not more prominent than in other dogs with long bones (at least in regards to osteosarcoma. We know of many Greyhounds that live to old age without contracting cancer. About amputation of toes. This is a very easy operation that probably causes the dog less distress once healed than having a toe that keeps coming out of joint. If you want to check other alternatives look into a vet that specializes in orthopedics and get their opinion. There are other things that can be done, but in a severe case they don't always work.

Does anyone know of alternatives to amputation for dislocated toes?? My little girl dislocated the inner toe on a front paw and is now swaddled in bandages. The doctor said if it reoccurs, amputation is usually done. Please email me at: jdorfeld@winholt.com if you have experience with a less drastic measure. Surgery is not a problem, I just want her in one piece if possible! Thank You!!

My husband and I were asked about taking a Greyhound from a friend that had adopted one when she became sick and we agreed. At first we were a little leary about it because of the size of the dog and our small dogs but once we bought Radar home it was love at first site. He has brought so much love and laughter into our homes that I recommend everyone to adopt one. Greyhounds are loving and very smart dogs who need a second chance and a warm and loving home.

If you have ex-racing Greyhounds I don't think you need to worry overly about bloat, it's almost unheard of in the racing dogs. The Greyhounds that are more prone are the very tall, narrow AKC Greyhounds. These tend to have much deeper (many times hanging below the elbow) narrower chests than the racing dogs. Bloat also seems to have a genetic connection. The best advice I know to avoid bloat is to not let the dogs exercise within an hour or so of eating, feed twice a day to cut down on amounts. The bloat study did find that raised feeding bowls are a contributing factor in dogs *prone to bloat*. The reason being that it lets the dog gulp the food faster. The study was legitimate.

My children and I are very excited about trying to adopt a greyhound. A very good friend of mine, Kate, adopted one of your dogs and we have been in love with him ever since. We are pondering if this is a good decision for us. We leave the house at 8am and do not return intil 4pm. Other than that we are always home. As greyhound owners we are all aware of that scary thing called bloat. We all try to take precautions against this. One of the things I did was purchase an elevated feeding dish. I have just recently read however, that this is not a good idea as to the contrary, it can contribute to bloat. They gave no reason why. This was a source that I would consider reliable but I certainly don't agree with that. Could anybody try to clarify this for me? If so you can email me at fawnagirl@yahoo.com I'd sure appreciate it!

It was 5 years ago, when you sent Burt to us, he was so scared and frightend not nowing where he was and the people who where around him, it took weeks for him to learn how to walk up stairs and trying to jump on the bed & many other things that take a great deal of paitent for a greyhound to learn anew, but we are so glad to have him for the years we've have him, burt is a the most wonderful delightful, lovely, greyhound, although he loves to hog the bed now and when we walk him he pulls, so it seems that our arms have grown because he pulls, so much. But rest a sure he's alive and kicking.

My husband John and I have recieved our first adoptee this past weekend, her name is Should Be Dutchy. I have read all the information prior to making the decision to foster and how Cynthia speaks of the joy it is to make a difference in a greyhounds life, but one will never truly know until they see the amazing progress of a dogs first couple days in a home. The first time we met "Dutchy" she was shy and withdrawn, but within one day she started to transform. We witnessed her overtaking the stairs for the first time, eating regular dog food for the first time and showing affection with it being returned for the first time. It is absolutely wonderful. If anyone is considering fostering a greyhound, please let my experience persuay you to do it. They are such loving animals that just need the opportunity to show it. Thank you Make Peace with Animals for everything you are doing for the dogs! -April, John, and "Dutchy"

It was really great to see so many of our Make Peace volunteers at the great gathering in Dewey Beach on Columbus Day weekend. Let's all plan to do it again next year! If you have a greyhound in your family and have never been there for the "Reach the Beach" weekend, think about attending next year. It is truly magical and will leave you speechless. Envision Woodstock '69, replace hippies with greyhounds, and you are there. There is something there for everyone and you will leave with a treasure trove of memories and new acquaintances from all parts of the country and all walks of life. The celebration is over and now it is back to work for the many greys in need. Reach down and help out if you can. Our best to all on the Make Peace team. GOD BLESS THIS GREAT COUNTRY OF OURS!

My love for greyhounds was instilled in me over 8 years ago. I was visiting a friend as he was house/dogsitting for a family member. Dolly came over to me as soon as I entered the home. She was the most affectionate and gentle creature. When John informed me about the fate Dolly was saved from I knew I would be adopting a greyhound. Once my husband I had a house and yard to provide for the dogs we knew it was time. Since the terrorist attacks that plagued our nation, many people are appreciating the little blessings that life has to offer. I am grateful for my husband and my greyhounds. My husband did not need any persuading when I broached him with my plans for adopting. Diva was our first delightful addition to the family. She is definitely an extrovert and is constantly amazing us with her outgoing style. I figured we would adopt another dog as soon as we could. Well, my husband was just as hooked as I was by the greyhounds after we adopted Diva. Tab, as of yesterday, has now arrived at his new home here in Horsham. He is a quiet fellow, and is intrigued by his new house and neighborhood. Last night, after a long first day, he anxiously settled into his new bed. Even though much sadness seems to permeate our everyday lives as our nation faces an uncertain future, our animals serve as constant reminders that peace is what we need in our world. I believe that peace can exist and I thank all of those people who enable our retired racing greyhounds to live the rest of their lives in homes that promote the goodwill that is necessary to enjoy each day to the fullest. Special thanks to Michelle, Dawn, and Cynthia! Michelle, you answered all of the questions we had, and prepared us for our future greyhounds. Even when the dog food sold out at the center, you went out of your way to give us food from your own house. You go above and beyond for the greyhounds and their owners. Dawn, your inviting home exhibits the love you have for the greyhounds. Each time we talked to you on the phone we became more appreciative of all the time you dedicate to help ensure the retired racers will have the "perfect" new homes that they not only need, but deserve!! Cynthia, we have not met or talked to you personally. However, after reading your books and newsletters, we feel we know you very well. The literature you provide prospective/new adopting families helps to instill the necessary background that truly enables the people and greyhounds to not only acclimate to the new living situations, but to thrive with each other! We're loving life with Diva and Tab!

As a busy parent of 2 children, the last thing that I wanted was a dog. Having other pets in the house I am usually the one responsible to take care of them and I knew a dog would be even a bigger responsibility. But one day, we went to the Renaissance Faire in Lancaster. There they had greyhound adoptions. My husband and my children ganged up on me and laid brochures around the house until I caved.I am really glad I did. In Oct,2000, we adopted Bebe's Tinkie, now known as Terra(meaning Mother Earth). She has been a true blessing for me as I became ill right after adopting her. I was in alot of pain, and she was my calming agent. How ironic is it that a dog who needed us turned out I needed her too. She is so calm and good natured and very much in the need of love. I never thought I'd hear myself say it, but I am glad my family "ganged" up on me. She is now my exercise partner. She's helping me to get in shape by begging for a walk every night around 7:30. When God gave us Terra-he gave us a true blessing.

Thanks Dawn. Ever Ready Robbie, now affectionatly know as "Second Chance" is adapting well into home life. We have clearly established who is boss -- the cat (ha ha). Having been bitten a number of times by dogs as a young girl, I was a little nervous when I got the call to come and get my new dog. I have no fear of my Chance whatsoever. In fact, here I am looking at the clock counting the minutes until the two of us get to go for our daily 5:15 walk. Oh, and one final note -- my shadow has never been so beautiful. He follows me everywhere!

Just a note to let you know how much we love our greyhound. Anyone debating whether or not this kind of a dog is for you, look no more. These are the best dogs there are! They are gentle and loving and big playful pups. We got our grey in Jan. of 2000 and were used to small dogs having boston terriers and pugs. It was almost a shock to see our grey when we picked him up, he was so big (we were told he was a small one for a male). We have enjoyed every minute of him from teaching him to go up and down stairs to watching him tear around the yard like on a race track to watching him as the kids crawl around him and the cat gives him kisses. He is one of the best dogs we have ever had. We have decided we want another one now to add to our family and are awaiting the adoption application. If you have any doubts about saving one of these majestic animals, spend some time with one, you will be determined to get one!! Love this site and a big thanks to all the volunteers!!

If you are considering adopting a Greyhound, please read this. We adopted our little girl last October. It was Friday the 13th, when Jean and Larry arrived with our baby. She was a beautiful dark faced brindle with a Halloween kerchief tied around har neck. We had not specified any sex or color, just whatever dog needed us most. It was one of the best days of my life. Harley Anne, formerly Sr's Norma had been "bounced" from another home after a little over a week because she had too much "personality". She was so scared she threw up on the livingroom carpet. She was very underweight, had infected ears and bad cage rubs in several places. Her coat looked very poor and flakey. You could feel that she was so very sad. But it was love at first sight. I have never had a dog in my life and this sweetie and I are bonded forever. I cry whenever I read about others who have had to say goodbye to their Greys. We can't imagine being without her. We won't even go on vacation without her. She is a member of our family. She has become the happiest, most beloved, beautiful dog. All the kids in the neighborhood love her. She is the one dog they all trust. Even the little girl who's face is scarred from another dog biting her will pet and hug Harley Anne. And she is probably one of the biggest females around at 73lbs and just about 3ft tall at the brow. I have no fear of this dog. She trusts me, and I trust her. I know she is a dog and not a human, but we look into each other's eyes and there is that bond. She is the most cheerful, even tempered animal I have ever had the good fortune to know. The nurse at the Animal Hospital where Harley Anne was treated said that in 20 years at the office, she had never seen a bad tempered Greyhound. That should speak volumes. Please take one of these gentle souls into your home. It will enrich your life and make your world a better place. I promise.

I am interested in finding out more about becomming a foster home. My husband and I have no other pets (except fish) and a small, but completely fenced courtyard. I have some allergies, and am concerned about adopting a dog straight away, without first getting some exposture. I have considered adopting a retired racer for years, but have only recently become a homeowner, enabling me to have the freedom to get a dog with out the problems of renting and landlords. I think that fostering is the perfect way for me to find out if a greyhound is compatable with my allergies and lifestyle, and also to find my special dog. Please contact suekovatch@juno.com

Saw the show on Pet Story, I am so thankful that Cynthia knew that Bill and Vanessa needed greys in their lives despite their tragedy. I am so happy they have their new children to love and am happy they took the other grey too. We have had greys for the past 8 years, just lost one to a blood clot he threw for the second time nearly two months ago and we could not save him this time, we had him for 21/2 wonderful years. You never get over the loss, this was our 2nd. We had a little girl I was to place in a home a week after our loss, we were very nervous bringing her in as our other greys were still grieving as were we, they fell in love with her instantly and as luck would have it her new intended family did not want her (not right color), so she is now a very loved and wanted part of our family. We never thought we could adopt so soon after loosing one.

My husband John and I are morning the loss of our greyhound, "Brandy." In October it would have been three years since she came to our home. In three years time, Brandy had warmed our hearts in a way that words do not give justice. Brandy never raced, but she had a horrid life as a foster dog as she was passed from one home to another before coming to us. My point is, please for whatever it is worth, and these words come from my heart, Love your dogs, your animals as though they are your children, nothing can ever take their place. Make Peace with Animals is a wonderful organization and God bless you for all that you are doing!

Just found the magazine "Celebrating Greyhounds" what a great find. I lost Buzz 6 weeks ago and am babysitting Willow for a few days. Also found Cynthia in the pages. Many years ago you visited my farm in Manassas Virgina as a potential site for the Burro rescue. Have your books and wish you well. I live and work on a boat and have given some consideration to "Greyhounds on Boats" any thought from others on this subject. Dick Dodson rwdodson@starpower.net

I think that those of you who cannot even comprehend the sentence "Please refrain from posting messages with political agendas" are in no position to debate the racing issue. If you cannot respect Make Peace's simple request, then it is clear that your anti-racing position is just a way to vent your aggression. If you "fight" what you believe to be wrong with the racing industry with anger and hatred in your heart, you may win the battle but will lose the war. The world will not be a better place because of your short-sighted efforts. It will just be more of the same. Only love and understanding can save the world.

We lost Patches on July 21st. He was with us for 5 unforgettable years. The feature that made The Patch stand out were those straight-up ears! OK, like the Buggs Bunny ears, ya know, the ones that separated and went around that hole to meet on the other side!!! Well anyway we miss him terribly but he will always be with us... Rich

I would like to dedicate this to my dearest friend Abbey who passed away on Monday, July 23. I am honored to have known you Abbey my first angel greyhound. You were beautiful in spirit and in flesh. I will always remember you standing with Penny at Hay Hill to be picked up by myself - I stood in awe as I gazed at you. Such muscle and strength in your flesh. And I can still see you digging your "greyhound bowls" as I called them, in our yard. Your sisters Annie, Freida and Charlotte and brother Jimmie all miss you very much. They looked to you for comfort and you gave back so much. We'll see you on the other side Abbey. All of my love sweetie angel - Laura

MPWA is certainly one of my most respected organizations. Their continued efforts are to be commmended. We adopted our boy "Mondo" in January of'95 when he was just shy of his fourth birthday. He has been such a pleasure to us we don't know how we'll get along without him. When we first picked him up he was no more than a piece of meat on a leash, fresh from the track, with open sores on his hind quarters and a urinary infection that took weeks to cure. He wouldn't raise his head and his tail stayed between his legs for months. One of your volunteers told us don't worry with love he'll get a personality. We thought "yeah sure". But he was right. About 6 months after we brought him home it was like a switch was turned on and he became the brightest spot in our lives. Unfortunately, Mondo won't be with us much longer. He has been diagnosed with bone cancer. We will do the "humane thing" when the time is right, but until then we will continue to make his life as happy and normal as possible. He is still relatively pain-free and loves his walks! I noticed from reading your guestbook that quite a few greyhounds have passed on from bone cancer and was wondering if this disease is inherent to greyhounds. I know we will be devistated when its Mondo's time but I also know we'll have another greyhound one day. We just can't imagine life without one. If anyone can answer question about this disease and its progression, please email us @ lehmbeck@warwick.net
